Day 8: Friday, 1998-07-03:My deadline of catching my flight in San Francisco was looming above me like an iceberg in a shipping lane. I was hoping that I could get there on time and not have to do the Phoenix plane ticket scheme. I was hoping that New Mexico’s and Arizona’s famously high speed limit of 75 MPH (set the cruise control to 81!) would spare me the expensive change of plans. I continued to head west on I-40, in to New Mexico (#45), and just before leaving New Mexico, I headed north on US 666 to Farmington, then west on US 64, then northeast on US 160 to Four Corners, where I bagged Utah (#46), Colorado (#47), and Arizona (#48). Then I headed southwest on US 160 to US 89, to Flagstaff, then west again on I-40 to Needles, California, where I quit early for the night and asked the desk clerk for a wake-up call at 1:30 AM. She looked at me like it was the strangest thing she’d ever heard. I didn’t have the heart to say anything more. The tally for the day was 4 states and 906 miles. Click to see full-sized (28K) map |
